چکیده

This study is situated within a national research program aimed at elucidating the multiple challenges faced by small coastal communities who are sensitive to the social and environmental events that shape and shift their livelihood. Decisions that affect these communities are often embedded within scientific discourse and neglect the diverse and rich locally situated knowledge that exists within the communities themselves. This study centers on a salmon hatchery, which not only produces fish, but a wealth of knowledge about salmon biology and ecology. This community exists within the federal salmonid enhancement program made up of research scientists who conduct experiments on salmon and whose findings shape aspects of hatchery practices. Drawing from interviews with hatchery staff, support biologists, and fish biologists as well as an ongoing two-year ethnographic study, we document the flow of knowledge within, into and out of this hatchery. We articulate knowledge flows between the human and nonhuman actors, places, communities, networks and regions that make up a fluid social topology of the salmonid enhancement program. Understanding how knowledge flows, sometimes freely and sometimes not, gives us insight into ways in which scientists can work with communities and foster a mutual learning environment. We offer a potential design for scientist/non-scientist relations, based on an already existing position within the salmonid enhancement program, the support biologist.

Involvement of hormones in olfactory imprinting and homing in chum salmon.

The olfactory hypothesis for salmon imprinting and homing to their natal stream is well known, but the endocrine hormonal control mechanisms of olfactory memory formation in juveniles and retrieval in adults remain unclear. In brains of hatchery-reared underyearling juvenile chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), thyrotropin-releasing hormone gene expression increased immediately after release from a...

Cost factor analysis of Caspian salmon (Salmo trutta caspius Kessleri, 1877) fingerling production and release in Iran

Iran contributes to the stock enhancement of several economically valuable fish species, including the Caspian salmon, S. trutta caspius, by producing and releasing millions of fingerlings into the sea. This work was conducted to determine the production costs of the Caspian salmon fingerlings in the years 2002 and 2003. For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared and filled in by an expert ...

They’ve Gotta Learn Something Unless They’re Just Out To Lunch: Learning and Identity in the Community of a Salmon Hatchery

Expert practical knowledge emerges through sustained participation in some community of practice. However, participation alone is not the sole factor that contributes to high levels of expertise in the workplace. Our multi-year ethnographic study of one fish hatchery and associated activity systems shows that deeper experiential (practical) and conceptual (scientific) knowledge emerged when fis...

Genetic Variation and Structure of Chinook Salmon Life History Types in the Snake River

—We evaluated 25 inland populations of Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in the Snake River with 13 microsatellite loci to test for contemporary genetic differentiation at three scales: between life history types, among regions within life history types, and among populations within regions. The genetic distance and diversity of natural Chinook salmon populations were also contrasted with...
